Make the Season Brighter: Consider Giving

Honor a loved one this holiday season by making a donation in their name to a local nonprofit. Two worthy options include:

Winnie the Pooh Preschool—Surely a grandparent would be thrilled to know that a gift given in their name was going to benefit the preschool their grandchild attends for learning and play. Checks, made payable to WTPP, may be mailed to:

Winnie the Pooh Preschool
Attn: Maggie Hudack
P.O. Box 387
Ashburn, VA 20146

Please note in the memo section that the money is a donation. A tax-deductible gift receipt will be mailed to you in return.

Community Holiday Coalition—Charities around Loudoun join forces for the “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” project. Its mission: “To serve less fortunate families, children and senior citizens by providing much needed items in a manner that promotes dignity and self respect. We believe that a single act of kindness can be the turning point towards a brighter future for those in need.”

Those interested in supporting the coalition in its efforts are invited to contribute a nonperishable food item, gift (new, please) or cash donation (made payable to “County of Loudoun Holiday Program”). A box labeled “WTTP Holiday Donations” will be in the hall outside Mrs. Benteler’s and Mrs. Jefferson’s shared classroom from December 5 to December 8. If you prefer, you may also give your donation directly to Kelly Senser (SR2 parent), who will be delivering collected items to the coalition on WTPP’s behalf.

Note to gift givers: When we asked the program coordinator which items topped the coalition’s needs list, she wrote: “Gift cards for [perishable] food ($10 denominations work the best), gifts or gift cards for teens and, of course, cash donations. One thing last year we really needed more of was hats, mittens and gloves, along with clothing for children, especially sizes 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and teen clothing. We received lots of clothing for infants & toddlers, but we kept running out of those sizes (that’s where the cash donations help!).”

For additional information about the program and a detailed list of gift suggestions, please visit www.loudoun.gov/dss/holiday. To contact Kelly with questions, call 703-858-3452 or email senserk@nwf.org.

Playdough Recipe

Every child enjoys playing with the playdough at school.  Now is your chance to make it at home.  This would be a great activity this winter when it is too cold to play outside.

1 cup flour

1/4 cup salt

2 tbs. cream of tartar

2 tsp. food coloring (or about a tsp. of icing color)

1 tbs. oil

1 cup water

1:Mix the flour, salt and cream of tarter in a medium sized pot.

2. Add the water, food coloring and oil.

3. Stir over medium heat 3-5 minutes. If the mixture looks like a lumpy mess, don't worry, it's turning into dough.

4. When the dough forms a ball in the center of the pot, remove from heat and let cool.

5. When cool, knead the dough several times on a floured surface.

6. Store in a ziploc bag.
